Art Curriculum Rationale
At Wyndham Primary School, our Art curriculum is designed with a focus on progression, sequencing, and the development of practical, theoretical, and disciplinary knowledge. We have chosen to use Cornerstones as our framework to ensure that our pupils are equipped with the necessary skills and understanding to engage in making artistic outcomes with emerging proficiency.
Progression
Our curriculum is carefully structured to ensure progression in learning. Pupils are taught a range of methods and techniques such as shading, mono-printing, and collage, using various media and materials including pencil, pen, paper, wire, clay, and poster. This allows for a gradual development of skills and knowledge over time.
Sequencing
The content of our curriculum is sequenced in a way that introduces pupils to practical skills and theoretical knowledge before delving into disciplinary knowledge. This approach ensures that pupils have a strong foundation before exploring more complex concepts in art.
Categories of Knowledge
Practical
Pupils are provided with practical knowledge through hands-on experiences in painting, drawing, sculpting, collage, printmaking, and studying various artists. These activities allow pupils to express their creativity and develop their technical skills.
Theoretical
Theoretical knowledge in our curriculum focuses on the history of art, meanings and interpretations of artworks, artists' processes, and the evolution of themes and ideas over time. Pupils learn about a wide range of art and artists across different time periods, contexts, and specialisms.
Disciplinary
Disciplinary knowledge in art helps pupils understand the nature of art as a discipline. Pupils explore varying examples of art, including traditional, modern, and contemporary paradigms. By studying different art forms and practices, pupils learn to discern quality and validity in art.
Whole School Aims
Our Art curriculum aligns with the whole school vision by promoting creativity, critical thinking, and cultural appreciation among our pupils. We believe that art education plays a vital role in nurturing well-rounded individuals who can express themselves creatively and engage with the world around them.
Subject Vision
We teach Art to inspire our pupils, foster their imagination, and develop their artistic skills. Our intent is to provide a comprehensive art education that equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, and understanding to appreciate, create, and critically analyse artworks.
Communication with Stakeholders
To effectively implement our Art curriculum, we will communicate the rationale, aims, and vision with all stakeholders including teachers, parents, and pupils. Regular updates on curriculum delivery, assessment practices, enrichment opportunities, and CPD sessions will ensure that everyone is informed and involved in the art education journey at Wyndham Primary School.
By following this curriculum rationale, we aim to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum, cater to the needs of our pupils with diverse backgrounds and abilities, and set aspirational goals for their artistic development.
