Maths Curriculum Rationale

At Wyndham Primary School, our Mathematics curriculum is designed with a focus on Mastery. We have chosen to align our curriculum with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

Whole School Aims

Our Mathematics curriculum aligns with our whole school vision by promoting a culture of high expectations, inclusivity, and excellence in learning. We believe that a strong foundation in mathematics is essential for pupils to succeed academically and in their future endeavours.

Subject Vision

Mathematics is taught at Wyndham Primary School with the intent of providing students with the necessary skills and knowledge to become confident, competent mathematicians. Our aim is to foster a love for mathematics, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare students for the challenges of the 21st century.

Mastery

Our curriculum is structured to ensure that all pupils become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, develop conceptual understanding, and can apply their knowledge rapidly and accurately. We believe that all students can achieve mastery in mathematics with appropriate support and challenge.

Inclusion

With an increasing Free School Meals (FSM) and Pupil Premium (PP) cohort, it is essential that our curriculum is inclusive and accessible to all learners. By utilising the principles of mastery, we aim to provide a curriculum that supports every pupil in making progress and reaching their full potential.

Oracy

Oracy skills are crucial in mathematics as pupils need to be able to explain their reasoning, justify their answers, and communicate their understanding effectively. Our curriculum incorporates opportunities for pupils to develop their oracy skills through discussions and collaborative problem-solving activities.

Problem Solving

Problem-solving lies at the heart of our Mathematics curriculum. We believe that by engaging pupils in a variety of routine and non-routine problems, they can develop their ability to apply mathematical concepts in real-world contexts, think critically, and persevere in finding solutions.

Apparatus

We follow the approach of using pictorial representations, concrete manipulatives, and abstract symbols to help students visualise, understand, and solve mathematical problems. This progression allows students to move from the concrete to the abstract, building a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts.

The use of concrete manipulatives and apparatus plays a significant role in developing pupils’ understanding of abstract mathematical concepts. Our curriculum includes hands-on activities and practical experiences to support students in making connections between concrete objects and abstract ideas.

Teacher Subject Knowledge

We recognise the importance of teacher subject knowledge in delivering high-quality mathematics education. Our curriculum supports teachers in continuously developing their subject knowledge, pedagogical skills, and understanding of how pupils learn mathematics effectively.

Communication with Parents

To effectively implement our Mathematics curriculum, we will communicate this information to stakeholders through regular updates in newsletters, parent workshops, and curriculum information sessions. We will also involve parents in their child's learning journey by providing resources and strategies to support mathematical development at home. Collaboration with staff, pupils, parents, and the wider community will be key to the successful delivery of our Mathematics curriculum.
