Writing Curriculum
At Wyndham Primary School, we have chosen to implement the Talk for Writing approach. Our use of Talk for Writing aligns with the requirements of the National Curriculum by providing pupils with opportunities to develop their proficiency in transcription and composition, as well as fostering a love for writing across different genres and text types.
Our implementation of the Talk for Writing approach aligns with our whole school vision. By incorporating Talk for Writing into our Writing curriculum, we aim to empower all pupils to become confident and skilled writers, regardless of their starting point or background.
Subject Vision
In teaching the subject of Writing, our intent is to provide pupils with the necessary skills and knowledge to express themselves effectively, creatively, and confidently through the written word. We believe that writing is a fundamental skill that opens doors to communication, self-expression, and learning, and we are committed to nurturing this skill in all our pupils through the Talk for Writing approach.
Mastery
Talk for Writing provides a structured framework that allows all pupils, including those with low levels of literacy on entry and SEND, to master the foundational skills of writing. By breaking down the writing process into manageable steps and providing scaffolds and support for pupils with speech and language issues, we ensure that every child can progress towards becoming confident and proficient writers.
Inclusion
The Talk for Writing approach is inclusive by nature, as it caters to a diverse range of learning needs and styles. It provides opportunities for all pupils to develop their language skills, reduce the vocabulary gap, and support language acquisition. By using actions to support memory and recall, we ensure that every child can engage with and internalise the writing process effectively.
Support for Diverse Learners
Talk for Writing offers scaffolds and models for writing that were previously lacking, particularly benefiting pupils who may struggle with traditional writing approaches. By providing a bank of resources to support imagination and story-telling, we encourage creativity and expression in all learners, regardless of their starting point.
Teacher Subject Knowledge
Implementing Talk for Writing also supports our teachers in developing their subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. By following a structured approach and utilising resources provided by the Talk for Writing framework, teachers can confidently guide pupils through the writing process and provide targeted support where needed.
Promotion of Diversity
Through the use of Talk for Writing, we can promote diversity in our curriculum by introducing pupils to a range of authors and stories. By exposing them to a variety of perspectives and voices, we aim to broaden their horizons and foster a culture of inclusivity and understanding.
Communication with Parents
To effectively communicate our Writing curriculum rationale and the implementation of Talk for Writing, we will engage with stakeholders through regular updates, open lessons, and workshops. We will involve parents in understanding the approach and its benefits for their children, collaborate with external partners to enhance our resources, and provide ongoing support and guidance for teachers to ensure successful implementation in the classroom.
